Florida Jury Awards $1 Billion in Nursing Home Neglect Lawsuit

A Florida jury in a nursing home abuse case awarded the victim's family more than $1,000,000,000 in a 2013 elder abuse trial. The Polk County jury was obviously enraged at the neglect Ms. Arlene Townsend faced while residing in the Auburndale Oaks Healthcare Center. The 69 year old resided in the nursing home facility for about 4 years and during that time, she suffered nursing home falls and pressure sores that got infected.

Ultimately, the jury decided to award the victim's family $110 million in compensatory damages and a whopping $1 billion in punitive (punishment) damages. There will obviously be appeals and collection issues, but this Florida nursing home abuse jury verdict speaks volumes about how potential jurors feel about elder abuse in our state.
